Why Brandy’s new music will cause her career to fail
It’s been a few years since we heard any new music from Brandy. Her last album “Human” was overlooked, not due to bad content but because of timing and promotion. Brandy who was a huge Pop star during her teenage years has had problems reliving her success in her adult years.
The reason why Brandy was successful was because of her music and image. Brandy made pop music with R&B influence. She was safe. Quite frankly she was the little Negro girl who could sing and perform. She was not a threat and it worked for her.
One of her biggest songs to date would be her duet with singer Monica, “The Boy is mine”. On this record Brandy brought Monica into her world. The duet remained classy intriguing, and was easy to sing along too. It worked. But now in 2012 the two have tried again, and failed. “It belongs to me” is the follow up to the aforementioned duet. But on this record Monica brings Brandy into Monica’s world, the ghetto.
Monica was always the more hood, dangerous one, which is why Brandy always saw more height than Monica. But in 2012 is this really what Brandy needs to be releasing in hopes of a comeback? How do you go from “Almost made you love me” to “leave that MacBook, close that Facebook”. Granted both of those things are relevant for today, but we always loved Brandy for her timeless music.
Years from now Facebook and the MacBook trends will fade, and so will that song. But songs like “Baby”, “Best friend” “The Boy Is Mine”, “Almost Doesn’t Count” and “Sittin Up in my room” are just as relevant today as they were back in the 90’s.
If Brandy does not go back to her formula of making timeless music than her career is over. Brandy was never considered to be a trendy artist, but now it seems that she is more interested in following trends than setting them, as she use to do. Brandy is too big of a talent to allow the radio to change her style.
Hopefully this duet is not a representation of what Brandy has to come, if so, then as a brandy fan I am worried, because she is on the last leg of her career.
