The reason why Drake and Wayne sell more than People Like Jay-Z and Kanye
Many have questioned how is it that Lil Wayne and Drake could have such high first week numbers, Drake at 700k Wayne at 900k. Many believe that the label has purchased majority of the units, which Cash Money CEO Birdman calls “Hustling backwards”. If people took the time to research trends and how marketing strategies are implemented they would see there is an explanation of how artist like Wayne and Drake could outsell the likes of Jay-Z and Kanye West.
Both Wayne and Drake are marketed as Pop and Rock stars. From Lil Wayne wearing Jeggings to Drake making music that makes you damn near suicidal, they appeal to the masses, the masses being white people.
Jay-Z and Kanye, who are in no doubt recognized and supported by White people, are Hip Hop stars. Which is why they do Hip Hop numbers. When you send a song called “Niggas in Paris” to radio, no matter how much money you have, the masses wont accept it. But songs like “How to love” by Lil Wayne or “Find your love” by Drake are songs that are musically friendly to everyone. White, black, young, or old.
Not to mention Lil Wayne just toured the USA twice, while The Watch The Throne tour still struggles to sell out the remaining dates left from the many dates they canceled. I guess the label bought those concert tickets too?
Artists often forget that when wanting to sell, marketing has to go into the music that you make.
Now lets get into numbers. Wayne and Drake have a label mate Nicki Minaj, who came out and sold around 450k her first week. She’s on young money. Why didn’t she do more? Since Birdman is buying all these albums? That’s because when Nicki first came out, she was a Hip Hop star, with a street and urban buzz. Nicki has since successfully made the transition to Pop Star and there is no doubt in my mind that her next album will see sales in the upper 600-700 thousands.
The type of star you are yields the type of sales you have. Now I’m not saying that labels do not buy records, because they do. But to think that every artist that sells more than Jay-Z, Kanye, or anyone a part of the throne are being bought out by labels is just crazy. It’s crazy because there are many other artist that have bigger first week sales than them.
But I’m sure most of this will go over the stans head.
